Sorry for coming in so late on this. Tom Scott and the Los Angeles session
musicians who helped her make the big change from FTR on to C&S and HOSL
seem somewhat underrated to me. Especially, compared with the praise
heaped on Jaco's contributions. Quincy Jones suggested to Tom
Scott that he should do a cover of Woodstock. Joni was impressed with
his take on it and asked him to play on FTR. Scott's credits on those
records seem modest given his band leader role that was evident at the MOA
shows. C&S is filled with marvelous details, the fading car horn sound on
Car On A Hill, cymbals crashing like the waves at Malibu, playing to the
rhythm of the rails on Just Like This Train Guitar genius Larry Carlton
blends so seamlessly into the sound you'd almost forget he's there. .And
not forgetting Max Bennett's bass lines (especially on HOSL title track).
John Guerin's solid but subtle drumming. Just thought I'd mention those
guys from a real exciting time in Joni music.
