They didn't treat Java as 2nd class.
Yes they did.
If you look at the original press releases, they said the endeavor was formed primarily to promote Microsoft technologies.
Also, at least in the first year, the published Java curriculum was unappealing compared to the .Net one. And a lot fewer sessions were scheduled.
