I had been very frustrated setting up K9 on my mobile. none of my account were
able to send mails though all were able to fetch new mails. i tried yahoo pop3
and live.com pop3 ... the same results.
I am using a personal wifi hotspot which uses the connection from a LAN, so i
dont think there is any port blocking problem. I even tried opening ports for
ssl and starttls from my laptop.
then just out of frustration i set the port on outgoing mail settings on k9 as
25 (the default smtp port) while specifying starttls security and it worked.
it shd never have worked but it did.
incidentally i was facing the same problem with thuderbird on my aptop and the
same hack worked for it too.
is this a potential security bug ... i mean are all my passwords sent using
plain text ? what about the content of the mail ?
someone please shed light
This doesn't sound like a hack. This sounds like it's the settings for
whatever mail server you are using. And it doesn't matter if you're using a
personal WiFi hotspot, it still has to go through some provider who may or may
not block certain ports. Although the most common port to be blocked for
outbound mail is port 25 if not using the provider's SMTP server. But all SMTP
servers are going to answer on port 25.
The correct settings for Yahoo are (from:
http://help.yahoo.com/kb/index?locale=en_US&page=content&y=PROD_MAIL_ML&id=SLN4724)
Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server - Requires TLS
Server: smtp.mail.yahoo.com
Port: 465 or 587
Requires SSL: Yes
Requires authentication: Yes
If your POP client doesn't offer TLS, you'll still be able to use SSL.
Login info - Requires authentication
Email address: Your full email address ([email protected].)
Password: Your account's password.
I show all three ports responding:
Starting Nmap 6.00 ( http://nmap.org ) at 2014-01-12 02:26 EST
Nmap scan report for smtp.mail.yahoo.com (98.138.105.21)
Host is up (0.038s latency).
Other addresses for smtp.mail.yahoo.com (not scanned): 98.139.211.125
63.250.193.228
rDNS record for 98.138.105.21: vcs-smyc.mail.vip.ne1.yahoo.com
PORT STATE SERVICE
25/tcp open smtp
465/tcp open smtps
587/tcp open submission
But directly from my laptop, my provider blocks port 25:
Starting Nmap 6.40 ( http://nmap.org ) at 2014-01-12 02:26 EST
Nmap scan report for smtp.mail.yahoo.com (98.139.211.125)
Host is up (0.032s latency).
Other addresses for smtp.mail.yahoo.com (not scanned): 98.138.105.21
63.250.193.228
rDNS record for 98.139.211.125: vcs-smyc.mail.vip.bf1.yahoo.com
PORT STATE SERVICE
25/tcp filtered smtp
465/tcp open smtps
587/tcp open submission
IMAP server settings are here:
http://help.yahoo.com/kb/index?locale=en_US&page=content&id=SLN4075
IMAP is a much better option for incoming mail.
live.com only appears to support ports 25 and 587:
Starting Nmap 6.00 ( http://nmap.org ) at 2014-01-12 02:31 EST
Nmap scan report for smtp.live.com (65.55.162.200)
Host is up (0.033s latency).
PORT STATE SERVICE
25/tcp open smtp
465/tcp filtered smtps
587/tcp open submission
But they also require authentication.

Hopefully, this helps you.
