I personally find it useful occasionally to emphasise a word or phrase by 
enboldened or underlining it. 
I see now that selecting HTML in K-9 Mail simply means that any formatted text 
in incoming messages is retained if the message is forwarded or replied to. 
Whilst accepting that the term Rich Text may have been originally a MS thing,it 
is often used to mean formatted text these days and I  note that in '1gravity 
LLC's description of their 'K-@ Mail' App,  they say it has a Rich Text Editor.
