I haven't been able to get K9mail (android) to work either with Outlook.
The receiving part (IMAP) works, but sending (SMTP) does not.

Settings which should work:

SMTP server:
smtp-mail.outlook.com

Security:
STARTTLS

Port:
587

Require sign-in. [yes]

Username:
firstname.lastn...@sitename.from.godaddy.where.office365.account.is.attached

Password:
<the_password>

With the same username+password, IMAP is working fine. Email can be read,
Drafts can be made.

But SMTP sending fails with "Username or password incorrect. (AUTH PLAIN
failed (Negative SMTP reply: 535 5.0.0 Authentication Failed))

If "Require sign-in" is not crossed, it kind of seems it accepts the
settings. But then when new email message is created and sent, it fails and
stays in "Outgoing"-folder.
