Al, I am happy with Freerouter. There is a tendency to underestimate the amount of work that these routers take. This is why I took the path of annexing the functionality of an existing solution (Freerouter) rather than trying to improve the routing capability of PCBNEW.
Also, I generally like to route manually, so the whole autorouter idea is not something that I personally would invest my development time in. With Freerouter you can route a trace or two at a time automatically rather than doing the whole board at once. My main point is again, I am very respectful of the work and expertise that Alfons has put into Freerouter. I now like the path to it and back to PCBNEW. So I cannot be motivated to invest in another solution at this point. Others are welcome. In some instances I think the discomfort with Freerouter is a matter of not having spent enough time with it.
