I'm not religious about it at all, but you don't think beauty is a benefit?

If the downside were slightly worse than an extra second to look at
the top of the file to determine what kind of file it is, this problem
might be easier to feel strongly about.

But as it is it seems like this isn't a clear win either way in my
mind.  Beauty is good, saving a second or two is also good.
