That leaves the question why mainframe designers actually chose
uppercase instead of lowercase ;-) (Bad taste? That were the days of
IBM, Apple did not yet exist...)

A little offtopic but it's worth the reply on those days scanning letters and making a distintion was a very time consuming task (processor cycles) also more complex terminals (remenber a terminal was a monitor and a keyword) so they had to choose one, on the other hand in those days terminals where black with green or orange fonts 80x25 a lot of lowercase letters maybe confuse with each other (a,q) (n,m), (o,a) , (i,j,l) and uppercase are more diferent from one and other. so it was less confusing.
