I'm sure you'd prefer to make your own implementation. And the most optimum way is to use opensource components since you can have access to the code directly. As per your description you want to control your security app , which pretty much behaves like ZoneMinder, through your cellphone. Do you want to do it via WAP? Bluetooth? WiFi? IrDA?
Anyway, here are some references that you can use: 1. HP has a collection of wireless-related opensource projects. http://www.hpl.hp.com/personal/Jean_Tourrilhes/Linux/ 2. Take a look at the ZoneMinder project since it might have the same features as you are aiming for. http://www.linux.com/articles/39557 3. Check out the "Indigo" project, which is being used in conjunction with Asterisk which provides the telephony hooks. http://scottstuff.net/blog/articles/2007/08/15/lightweight-home-security-with-indigo-and-asterisk 4. You may be interested in approaching your project with Java. Check out http://www.developer.com/java/other/article.php/3612951 . It comes complete with commented source code and discussion of the project. 5. IBM's collection of opensource wireless tools (You might want to visit this first!) http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/linux/library/wi-p2papps.html 6. InformIT has a very good article on Home Security and Surveillance (i love the reference to "hard wired surveillance and security systems" ) - http://www.informit.com/articles/article.aspx?p=102618&rl=1 7. TechReview article on Home Wireless Security - http://www.techreview.com/Infotech/16651/page1/ Hope these things will be helpful. Good luck on your thesis.
