Yes, this is difficult.  But we don't know your capabilities.  Also,
you don't need to develop a product as good as the RSA's SecurID.
There are so many things to authenticate over the Internet and might
need a similar technology.

Anyway, additional suggestions for your thesis topic would be:

[1] Develop a PSTN simulator device that can also act of at least 2
PSTN providers and that means there will be at least 1 FXO and 1 FXS
for each PSTN.  This is used primarily for testing.
[2] Develop a T.38 soft modem for Asterisk or CallWeaver that will
pass through the SIP channel using SIP/TLS and S/RTP.
[3] 1 FXO port with its own echo canceller on a PCMCIA or mini-PCI card.
