I never liked them either, but now I have a laptop provided by my
employer which has both the eraserhead, and a touch pad directly in
front of the space bar. I am as surprised as anyone to say that I
much prefer the eraserhead pointer.

Aside from the fact that I barely have to move my hand to search for
the pointer, there is also the fact that with the touch pad, the
mouse jumps around more than I like. It most annoyingly jumps
while I'm typing and the base of my thumb, or the heel of my hand
touches the pad.

Of course the best pointing device I have seen so far are those
Kensington trackballs. The ones that have the enormous ball in a
square base. I bought one for about $19 five years ago. Now I can
only find them listed for $99.
