Well, after this morning I'm officially changing my view on SBC DSL from
very good to not recommended due to customer service. 10 months ago I
signed a year long contract. This weekend I move to Seattle (out of the
service area). I call to cancel my phone today. They want to charge me
$200, when the service itself is $40/month. They will not allow me to
pay for the remaining 2 months, even though I'd be more than happy to
(paying out the remaining contract is fair to me). They will not allow
me to keep service for the next tenants for 2 months, unless I keep all
services including long distance on the line. I'm not a big enough fool
to let people I don't know use my phone long distance for 2 months.
Talking in a polite tone through several levels of customer service only
led to a PO box I can dispute the charges with. Be very careful of
dealing with them- if they can at all, they will screw you.

Join the club, they managed to screw me out of over $1000, and never
actually delivered a usable DSL line to my house. I refuse to use them
for anything, and will only use a reseller of their lines, if I have no
other choice. What they are doing is probably not legal, but if they
behave like they did in my case, they will drag their feet, placing
things on your credit report and removing them when called on it until
you need a home or car loan, and cannot afford to keep up the fight. Pay
the $200 and bad mouth them to all your friends who seek your technical
advice is the best course I have found to take.
