You should be able to sendthem a copy of a utility bill at your new address to
prove that you couldn't continue the contract. You should then not be charged
the disconnect fee. Talk to a "supervisor" to get this straightened out.

Recall Lilly Tomlin in the 1970's SNL skits of Earnestine the phone company
operator. She once said something like, "We don't care, we don't have to. We
are the Phone Company"

Quoting Gabriel Sechan <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>:

Well, after this morning I'm officially changing my view on SBC DSL from very good to not recommended due to customer service. 10 months ago I signed a year long contract. This weekend I move to Seattle (out of the service area). I call to cancel my phone today. They want to charge me $200, when the service itself is $40/month. They will not allow me to pay for the remaining 2 months, even though I'd be more than happy to (paying out the remaining contract is fair to me). They will not allow me to keep service for the next tenants for 2 months, unless I keep all services including long distance on the line. I'm not a big enough fool to let people I don't know use my phone long distance for 2 months. Talking in a polite tone through several levels of customer service only led to a PO box I can dispute the charges with. Be very careful of dealing with them- if they can at all, they will screw you.
