High speed connections were one. If you wanted to run 14.4 or HST, you needed a fossil driver. But also, because all the door games were written to use a fossil driver rather than direct serial-port access. So the door programmers didn't need to mess around with interrupts and what-not, they could just write the game.

Nowadays, you just use a fossil to TELNET driver. heh.
