High speed connections were one. If you wanted to run 14.4 or HST, you
needed a fossil driver.
But also, because all the door games were written to use a fossil driver
rather than direct serial-port access. So the door programmers didn't
need to mess around with interrupts and what-not, they could just write
the game.

Nowadays, you just use a fossil to TELNET driver. heh.

I ran a telnet bbs and don't remember using a fossil driver for Mystic BBS
or the door games.  But I might have and just don't remember...Running a BBS
in Linux and using DOSemu was pretty neat.  Wish I would have known about
Linux when I ran my dial up bbs...Sooooo much easier.
