Maybe it has to do with my plan.

I had a package for services such as call waiting, caller ID, etc.
bundled with a certain amount of long distance. My bill was under
$30.00 for several months (usually around $25.00). As soon as AT&T took
over, I started to pay over $60.00 per month. The ~$25.00 package with
SBC used to include long distance. Now it is only for the services and
options, and the long distance is a separate package for ~$25.00.

Maybe I can find a better package, but I was very disappointed with they
way I automatically got higher bills.

Is there causation, or just coincidence? I didn't notice a bill
increase after the merger/takeover.
