It's what they call their threading.  I'm using Thunderbird now (not
for Gmail) and I have not seen this Gmail-style threading you speak
of.  Am I missing out?

This is true.  And actually my partner will send sensitive info to my
Gmail account rather than hardboot.  She more comfortable with the
slim possibility of a tech at Google happening to read her email than
with the somewhat more likely chance that mom or pop at my hoster will
read it.  She's probably right.
