The source of your problem is right here. You cannot just copy a VOB
file off a DVD and expect it to play nor can you play a mounted DVD
without some extra options.

The layout of a DVD follows a normal ISO file system, but the video data
(VOB files, a modified form of MPEG2) on a DVD is encrypted using DCSS.
Also, the byte order is messed up for a DVD vs other data storage devices.

You need two extra pieces of software to play the DVD. The first is a
package called libdvdread. The second is called libdvdcss. You said you
could play DVD's with Totem so I'm assuming these are installed on your
system but you should double check.

The DVD does not need to be mounted to play. To play the first piece of
the DVD, do this:

$ mplayer -fs -dvd-device /dev/dvd dvd://1

where the options have the following meaning:

-fs Full screen
-dvd-device Specifies the actual DVD device. On my system it is a
symlink that is automatically created by udev.
dvd:// The specifier for the DVD program to play. DVD's can have
multiple programs broken up into chapters.

If this doesn't work, you have something wrong with your system that
must be fixed first.

Once you have that part working, you can change the command line to be
something like this:

$ mplayer -vo jpeg -dvd-device /dev/dvd dvd://1

And it should dump a bunch of jpeg files in the current directory.

All of this information is available in the man page. I recommend
reading the man page online at
<http://www.mplayerhq.hu/DOCS/man/en/mplayer.1.html> because it's easier
to read there than on a console due to its length. In particular, I
recommend reading the examples at the end of the page.
