MythTV will run in a window on a desktop. You can also get mplayer to
read the output of a video capture card directly.

I think the real problem is finding a decent large monitor. All the ones
I've looked at so far suck when viewed at normal (18-24 inches)
distances. They might seem OK for a TV, but by the time you sit far
enough away, they have brightness problems. A computer monitor typically
has a brightness of around 250-300 NITS, while a TV has a brightness
starting around 1000 NITS and goes up from there.
