I think the real problem is finding a decent large monitor. All the ones
I've looked at so far suck when viewed at normal (18-24 inches)
distances. They might seem OK for a TV, but by the time you sit far
enough away, they have brightness problems. A computer monitor typically
has a brightness of around 250-300 NITS, while a TV has a brightness
starting around 1000 NITS and goes up from there.

I've been very happy with my Dell 24" LCD. I've got the same ones at work and home, and the 1920x1280 resolution (~16x10) is very nice and crisp for up-close viewing/working. These panels are VERY bright, and I generally have the brightness turned down to 20% or so to keep from burning my eyes out.

Our TV is a 42" 1920x1080 (1080p HDTV) Westinghouse LCD that I got from NewEgg for something like $1300 a few months back, and it's got a wonderfully sharp picture. Looks perfect in our living room, where we sit anywhere from 5'-10' from it.
