I think the real problem is finding a decent large monitor. All the ones
I've looked at so far suck when viewed at normal (18-24 inches)
distances. They might seem OK for a TV, but by the time you sit far
enough away, they have brightness problems. A computer monitor typically
has a brightness of around 250-300 NITS, while a TV has a brightness
starting around 1000 NITS and goes up from there.

My Apple Cinema 30" display is the first computer monitor I've had where
full brightness was too bright for computer use. But, it sure makes for
nice movies. Interestingly, it's only spec'd at 400 nits, so probably
still not as bright as a TV. I have to turn it down to the 50% setting on
brightness for usable computer use.

I don't watch TV, so I'm probably not used to them. My experience has
mostly been annoyance at the low resolution of standard definition TV. I
still watch DVDs on the Cinema display, though.
