What is the problem that you are trying to solve by launching a

Nothing fancy, I just want sending the email to trigger my sig script to
change the sig so that a new one is ready for the next email. It's
better to trigger it *after* sending the email because on my system
~"kbuildsycoca"~ can take up to a minute to run. Or at least after
starting a new email, it can work in the background. I do NOT want to
have to wait for kbuildsycoca to finish before getting my email composer
when I initiate it. In any event, the loading of thunderbird email
composer window should not be impeded by the loading of kbuildsycoca.

Have you taken a look at the Signature Switch addon?
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/611

According to the FAQ, you can setup a fortune cookie signature list
that changes with every email:

That's egZAKly what I want! Thank you.

I just installed it, but have to restart tBird before it will take effect. I'm just not ready to restart it right now. I'll have to do the rest (setting it up) later.
