Looking at an old Ubuntu install, there's alot of /etc/gnome stuff and
the runtime stuff in /usr/bin. Do you still have some of that or did it
get wiped out somehow?

Example from old Ubuntu/gnome install:

/usr/bin/gnome-session
/usr/bin/gnome-session-save
/usr/bin/gnome-smproxy
/usr/bin/gnome-wm
/usr/bin/gnome-session-properties
/usr/bin/gnome-background-properties
/usr/bin/gnome-control-center
/usr/bin/gnome-panel
