so gnome was not working previously? If it was, then something( RPM ) must have
removed it and it was missed it in the list of things to update/remove/install.

FYI, a big stink about package managers started a year ago when ESR dumped
RedHat for Ubuntu because RPM ate his system and he couldn't get it running
again.
So you are not alone if that's any help.
