I bet the file manager has some way to burn files to CD or gnome includes a cd burning applet that uses cdrecord. A modern desktop environment has a LOT of functionality in it. Thus the huge dependency chain. People are asking for that stuff so they are getting it. If you don't want/need it use a different wm.
