I have a difficult time believing all kinds of hardware would have to be
replaced because the OS was replaces. All the nodes are probably
devices on a CAN bus and since they were bringing many other
models online with the new OS, it's a tough one to buy that it would
require much if any hardware replacements.
It would not surprise me at all after spending several years working on
after market computers for vehicles. Our biggest customer at QUAKE
Global was (and it still is their biggest customer) Volvo Trucks. The
automotive industry is not that inclined as to make everything PnP.
Nearly everything is proprietary and one module is generally locked into
how the module(s) it communicates with operates. Change one thing, and
there's a good chance everything else on the bus has to be changed. They
are not all CAN bus either, there's J1708, OBD II, etc.
