The second statement implies the first. Both imply an unknown measure of ignorance. So they are essentially the same.



You take far too great liberties to make them the same. The first seems to be a subset of the second, like a tree is a plant. Saying they are essentially the same is like saying that all plants are trees. The first expresses only lack of knowledge. The second expresses doubt, and implies a lack of knowledge (as you stated).
