Of course, now that I think about it, the computer seems to be playing
the clarinet with a sax-like "mouth position" anyway, which is part of
what gives it the amateurish tone.
I took Sax lessons for a short time many years ago (I had foolishly decided
to major in music in college, and lessons were required). The teacher
insisted I switch to a clarinet mouth position. I resisted because it was
very uncomfortable - try holding an alto sax under your armpit - and I could
barely get anything out of it. And that was after I had already been playing
for ten years.
Ick. I play tenor, and there's no *way* you could have a clarinet
embouchure without severe neck and arm cramps. Besides, I use a metal
mouthpiece with a long facing (big gap between mouthpiece and reed),
which would sound horrible at that angle.
I majored in Music as well, though I did end up going through with it.
My BA is in Theory & Composition, though I've been a computer guy all
my life.
I haven't played in so long now I consider it a past life. The last time
I picked up my sax, I could barely get a sound out of it, my muscles
having turned to mush. In fact, I've almost forgotten how to read music.
I still have my Buescher alto sax (it needs work - someday). In my
childhood I played piano, and even accordion. Then played clarinet for a
bit before transitioning to sax. My favorite instrument was bari sax,
which I played 3 of 4 years in high school. Auditioned for the Navy
School of Music (but you gotta be professional quality to get it there -
talk about intimidating!), but no pass, then played a bit in college
before switching majors (sooooo many egos).
After not playing anything for years and years I decided to re-teach
myself piano. I bought a low-end keyboard (Roland XP-10. I suppose
purists might consider it more toy than piano) and some books, but never
found the time to practice. So here it sits. Someday.
I miss music a lot, and if I lost all my computer stuff, I wouldn't miss
that near as much as the music.
