<huh?> I had lots of checkmarks in
 http://www.kernel-panic.org/manage
click on "wiki" then "recycle_bin (deleted wiki pages")
  (that displays "ATFolder at /wiki/recycle_bin"
 click on "security" tab
   and see 100 lines with
almost all having acquire and manager checked
a couple lines have no acquire-check
a few have an anon check, a few have an owner check
(on my home system, some had member checked)

Hmmph, I'm getting confused. I have seen somewhere
"Never click around in the ZMI security screens, use the workflow!"
but I can't say I understand workflow, and don't get any intuition from
poking around in ZMI.

First look seems to that I did manage to hide recycle_bin on my home
system via security checkmarks -- but I haven't played too much
subsequently. Besides, I'm running a newer system. In any case, I'm wary
of making changes without knowing what each change really does, 'cause
that makes it hard to correctly undo a screwup -- especially after some
time passes.

This is where zope/plone kinda dampens my enthusiasm.

Exclude from navigation hides things from the leftside nav-menu, but I
(like you say) don't see where the "recent changes" thing comes from --
oh, I guess it's a portal -- I'll go looking some more.
