I'd never buy a dell. Refer to my comment about, "you get what you
pay for" -- there really are reasons why dell machines are cheap.
It's like buying the cheapest commodity parts on the shelf and
tossing it into a case. I wouldn't ever depend on one for something
critical.
Then, who would you suggest?
Either a Sun or an HP. I've had very, very good success with the HP
machines and rarely encounter failures or problems with the recent
series of hardware. Back when HP bought Compaq and took over their
server division, there were some transition problems especially with
older DL360 models, but any critical problem has largely been solved.
You also can't beat HP's support -- if something is broken they'll work
with you to fix it, and make follow-up phone calls to both the
technicians and the customers in the event of a system needing support.
Their warranty replacement is also very good -- they'll send you out the
replacement and give you a good grace period to send back the defective
part, and sometimes not even want the defective part at all. HP's
support technicians also speak perfect English, and I've never come
across one with a thick accent.
The OOB management interface (iLO) is OS-agnostic; that is, it doesn't
require a windows box to be useful like Dell does.
I'll check and see if I can tweak that quote a bit more and get the
price down on the DL145. They really are good machines. I just ordered
10 of them for a project (albeit these were fully loaded).
Cheers,
-Kelsey
