No, this problem has nothing to do with mime types. I'm not clear why
you think it has.

It also has nothing to do with Ubuntu's absent root. I Debianise my
Ubuntu installs by creating a real root - as my explanation of the
symptoms makes clear.

Yup, this is precisely the behaviour I don't want. The fonts on the
app interface themselves isn't a problem - although it disturbs me
that the devs aren't interested in finding out why - but the menus
also exhibit the same large font and that us a nuisance. Also, some
apps launched via Krusader inherit the large fonts and that too is a
nuisance.
