Okay, we have progress, sort of.

When launching root mode K from within K, or from the menu - which is
simply running krusader as root user, then I see the font problem.

However, if I launch with:

  sudo krusader

then the fonts are okay - and so are the icons - but I lose all mime
types. Also, user action don't work, nor most open actions - some
return "KDEinit could note launch '<application name>'".

Also, if I launch via kdesu krusader, or a menu item using that
command, then I have the original bad fonts and incorrect icons
problem.

If there is a later package than the one I have:

  krusader_1.70.0-1dapper0_i386.deb

then I'd be happy to try it.
