Great! Yes, having to translate blindly is quite hard, but there will be the opportunity to fix translation (before 4.0 for "blocker" bugs that severely affect the user experience, after 4.0 for minor refinements).

We have 32 suggestions at https://translate.apache.org/pt/aoo40/ ; if you can quickly review them (or if you authored them!) please let us know that they are OK, so that we can approve them and bring Portuguese to 100%.

Suggestions reviewed. Waiting to fix the rest.
I have a few doubts. Can anyone help please?
- If I re-edit the files how or when are those changes take effect?

You submitted PO files. If you work in Pootle, you work on the "live" translation directly. With PO files, instead, we import them and we can (and we normally do) replace existing translations in Pootle with the content of your PO files. From Pootle, translations are then imported into the source code (usually, when the UI is at 100%) and then they appear in the OpenOffice test builds at https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OOOUSERS/Development+Snapshot+Builds#DevelopmentSnapshotBuilds-AOOSnapshotfullsets

So I'll have to wait for a Portuguese - PT snapshot, right? I didn't find any here.
- In this type of string should the words between quotes be translated?
<variable id="tabverb">Escolha <emph>Tabela - Unir
Tabelas</emph></variable>
I translated only the part between <emph>.

Correct.

-In this case:
"In Writer, the command <item type="me...defaultinline></switchinline>+C
key combination i...comment. A line connects anchor and comment box.",
"...switchinline>+C key combination..." was translated to
"...switchinline>+N ..." the letter in red was already translated so I
kept it but without knowing what it is used for or where it is used.
There are cases where I didn't change it for the same reason.

I would need a link in the form
https://translate.apache.org/pt/aoo40/basctl/translate.html#unit=14924937
to be able to help you better. You made the most reasonable choice by keeping the existing letters.

-Here are a few words that I think are functions. Sould they be
translated? I left them as they were:
"<ahelp hid="SC_CHECKBOX_RID_SCPAGE_CALC_BTN_REGEX">...> e com o
VLOOKUP, HLOOKUP e SEARCH. </caseinline></switchinline>",
but it could be:
"<ahelp hid="SC_CHECKBOX_RID_SCPAGE_CALC_BTN_REGEX">...> e com o
PROCVERT, PROCHOR e PROC. </caseinline></switchinline>"

This one seems to be in the text, so in this case you should use the translated version of the Calc function names. Again, a link would be helpful.

-Are these variables:
"...window as "left lbrace <?> right rbrace". Now, a left and a right
set bracket can also be inserted using "lbrace" and "rbrace", with or
without wildcards."

Do you mean this string?
https://translate.apache.org/pt/aoo40help/translate.html#unit=14989829
In this case they are commands to be typed in Math (File - New - Formula) and they should be left untranslated.
I'll have to work these a little more to understand what to do and try to find the Calc function names translation.
Thanks,
Pedro.
