I never got this error with XP, but I have not disabled IPSEC. I did get the same error with Windows 2000 Professional, however. My logfile (http://www.jacco2.dds.nl/networking/win2000-l2tpd-error.log.gz) is a bit different from yours, though. The PPP server on my Linux server sends one LCP ConfReq and then Windows 2000 disconnects immediately. So it might be something different. Have you looked at the PPP log? This is a long shot, but could you try adding "silent" to your PPP options? Perhaps it helps...
