In that case, I bet dollars to dougnuts it's a PTY problem. rp-l2tp sets the line discipline to (Linux-specific) N_HDLC, which probably turns off echoing. Not sure what l2tpd does, nor whether it sets the right TTY options. You might want to glance over "Advanced Programming in the UNIX Environment" by W. Richard Stevens -- he has a whole chapter devoted to TTY's under UNIX. -- David.
