I'm pretty sure (though not 100% positive) that a size 8 bead is a (seed) bead which, measured hole to hole is 1.8 of an inch. That is, 8 beads, strung together, will measure 1" (2.5cm). So each bead is slightly larger than 3mm. Your 4mm ones may be a touch too big, but should still work.
