It helps a lot to get a package of the larger size of
coil-less safety pin and put one on the needle after each
repeat.
I have a coarse piece of Old Shale on four forty-eight inch
needles, and put small gold safety pins into the fabric
between repeats -- that way I have to move them only after
four or eight rounds, and the on-needle pins can be
reserved for marking corners. (Plus a pink paper clip for
the beginning of the round.)
(NEVER, by the way, get circulars longer than your arm when
planning to use them like sock needles. Aside from the
difficulty in moving up the stitches, I had to give up
knitting in the rocking chair after flattening three of the
points.)
Something I've never tried, since I don't do fine lace
knitting, is the "safety line" -- a slick thread through
every stitch on a plain row, so that no disaster can affect
stitches below that row.
