thank you all for the many information to the theme knit lace.
Thank you Tamara for your explanation how the size of a bead No. 8 is to
understand. I have knit up to 15 cm and they look good. I decided not to go
and buy other ones but it is good to know what to look for for future
projects.
@Betty, after knitting lace for so long time I have finally understood why
to use a safety thread. I read about this in different places but did not
understand why I should do this work.
For stitch markers I use something different. Most markers, custom bought
and do-it-yourself, I find to heavy, especially when I use lots of them in
difficult designs.
So I cut from threads (slick cotton in different colour than the lace
thread, threads from previous projects) pieces about 12 cm (5 inches) and
knot the ends together, to form a sling (I hope this is the right word).
This I put on the needles instead of the markers. Sometimes I use different
colours in difficult patterns (for example blue for the border, red for the
pattern repeats and another colour for special points inside (wide) repeats.
The same colours in fine liners or colour pencils I use to "mark" the
charts.
I can replace it when they get lost and it uses up the odds and ends from
finished projects. And I can use as many colours as I need to have the
"perfect overview" of the pattern.
And when I had to interrupt my knitting in the middle of the row (when kids
cry?!?) of 276 stitches, I mark the last done stitch with a yellow or orange
dry marker.
I also write the number of stitches with a pencil side by side to the row
number behind a back slash (45/90). I do this before I start to knit, than
its easiest, as I have only to add the increases. So it is easy to count
stitches for controll.
