I tie my markers before cutting them. I fold the end of the
thread, then tie an overhand knot (the simplest knot) in the
doubled part and cut it off the ball. This makes a loop not
much bigger than my needle, and the doubled ends make a
little flag that makes it easy to spot.
If for some reason I want to mark a stitch, I can slip a
marker over it before knitting it, and it's easy to cut the
marker and pull it out when the work is done.
I darn short pieces of thread into the work when counting
rows -- I use a long piece the needle, and cut it after
re-counting the rows to make sure it's in the right place.
The blunt needle that carries the thread is also a handy
pointer for counting the rows.
