That's called DRM, Digital Rights Management, and it has been proven to annoy legitimate users of the works while providing hardly any inconvenience to pirates, who can easily break the lock and make as many copies as they please. People who own legitimate copies of DRMed work have been known to buy pirated editions too, to get a DRM-free version.
