Alex I forgot to say, there are ways to get the printer and software to print the patterns at exact size. I create my files in microsoft WORD. For an image you can specify the exact size the image should appear, in millimeters, and you can tell the software to absolutely maintain that size.
To get the printer to print at the right size, you have to make sure the whole page fits on a sheet of paper, with adequate margins. Especially if you are thinking of American vs English paper sizes. As you create the chapters, set the margins large, large enough that there is extra room around the edges of the image. Then the printer has no reason to shrink the page to make it fit.
