First af all, this text from Antje's mail:
To Jacquie's question "why someone would be so 'altruistic' that they would want to do this": I ask myself the same. It is a false concept of "being generous".
This is something I have never understood, why they need to be so generous with other people and not with the authors? I have my own reply to this. Because they think we have great earnings selling the books. So, we are "the bad ones" and the fellow lacemakers are "the good ones" that have to be helped. No mind if I have been generous putting a low sale price.
Once said that, and respect with the question of Anne Marie:
What is your opinion on this? Are there any other lace associations that interprets the law like this?
The Catalonian Lace Ass. ACP in Barcelona, has its own library, that is at disposal of its members for consulting. The Association does not lend the books and the members may only read the books in the library.
With respect with John Mead comment:
This is an area where a lot of universities should have gotten into trouble, in making up class packets of photocopies from selected works that the students then purchase and use as a textbook; that's a violation of fair use.
Recently an University of Barcelona was penalized because they made up photocopies of copyrighted books, that were used by students as class notes.
As author (being generous), I could agree with the idea of sharing the books in private, so into lace Associations or classes, but always within a limited circle, as far as I strongly disagree is that the books are photocopied and sold in lace events, being the profit only for people (the vendors) who has nothing to do with the books, excepting an easy profit. Or if we speak of the internet, only become protagonist as children do ..I have more books than you !
