Bronwyn writes: Unfortunately, there are not always "others on the same site" asking lower prices. When I first started needle lace, I scoured the internet looking for instruction books. I found 3 that I could afford. They were either in print, or where on sale for cheaper than when they'd been offered in the first place. All the rest were well over $150USD and up to $500USD. This was back in 2005.
I didn't buy the books, because I didn't have that much money to spend on a book. I have spent many hours trying to find "reasonable priced" books, especially when a title is stated here on the Arachne list. Many times I'm disappointed because it's either not being sold at all, or it's for the prices quoted above and in other emails. One person I know, took it upon herself to sell the books of dear friends who had died so that other lacemakers could have them, and donated the proceeds to a lace cause. But, after doing this for a while, she became exhausted and didn't want to do it anymore. Presumably a lot of the copies of Catherine's books end up in the garbage when the original owner dies. But, the question is, what would you pay to have a legal copy that is easy to receive? One can deliver large files to someone using something called "Lock box". If a buyer was willing to pay, let us say $10 to Catherine for a legal digital copy of the book, she could send the money via pay pal. Catherine could subscribe to a Lock box account and put the copy in it for a short period of time while the buyer downloaded it. Yes, there is no guarantee that the buyer won't copy it for another, although at $10, wouldn't you just tell your friend to go to Catherine and have her do the work of transferring it? Isn't $10 more than Catherine makes on a book in a best case scenario anyway? Since it is mostly us who want the book, we could all subscribe to the "Arachne Moral Code" or the "Ning book club rules" or whatever you want to call it, and when we deal with Catherine, or whomever, we swear we won't share the copy. It is a lot easier to be moral when you are talking $10 than $500. Devon - To unsubscribe send email to [email protected] containing the line: unsubscribe lace [email protected].
