Hello Bev, Re thread: > B1627 > 2/8s Rev. Q4703 > Shetland > Driftwood
Secure in my little bobbin lace niche I never thought of weaving, but it is a large cone - 18cm. Ilske Thomsen also suggested I burn the thread. I burnt a piece of the mystery thread, and a piece of perle cotton for comparison. Both burned similarly but, unlike the cotton, the mystery thread left a shrivelled black ash - similar to melting nylon although the ash was soft. So it is most likely a synthetic thread, or a mixture. And Brenda Paternoster suggested the numbers might be a post code. Q4703 is a post code for Rockhampton, Queensland, Australia, so I have asked on an Australian list if anyone knows of a supplier there. The 2 of the 2/8s means 2-ply, the 8 is the size. Weavers tend to pronounce it 'two-eights' as written. The sheen suggests to me it is mercerised cotton. However, if it is as fine as 50/2 cotton, then it could be something else. You could try a burn test to see if it melts (synthetic) or leaves ash (cotton)? Just an idea. - To unsubscribe send email to [email protected] containing the line: unsubscribe lace [email protected]. For help, write to [email protected].
