Joseph, I have taken this same approach with braids. It is great fun and adds texture to areas which can otherwise be flat. The main issue I have run into is having the repeats fall in line with the same place they want to be for cloth stitch. I would think this would closer with weaving stitches than braids. This is something to look out for when planning stitches you will use. You need to look and see if the pin dots need to be moved further or closer apart.
