To be correct, I should not have used the term "indexed", since actually values falling between grid points are interpolated, and the TRC table does not tnecessarily need to have 256 or 65536 entries.

the last enty in the table corresponds to the max. device
value (i.e. 1.0 or 255 or 65535 - however you normalize it),
thus there do not exist table entries beyond this value.
