Basically, the problem is that most distributions (at least the major ones) have a policy of not replacing a package by the next version, but of only applying security fixes to existing packages for their stable release.
The good thing is that by discovering this we were able to pressure on distributions to include 1.18 instead of patched 1.17, (k)ubuntu has allready made the change for their next release, I hope other distributions will follow. -- Cyrille Berger
