That would be very cool! You may even be able to consume some of the
ODP's data as input for your system (as long as you follow their license
blah blah blah).

You always need to start with small categories. Then as you gain
experience, you can apply for privileges over larger and larger
categories. Once you have succesfully edited several small
sub-categories, you can apply for greenbuster priviliges in the main LDS
category. This will let you preliminarily list new sites, without giving
you full editer privileges in the category. This will also give you more
experience with the full LDS heirarchy.

That said, there are probably many of you on the list who have the
topical expertise to be great editors for a small portion of the total
LDS heirarchy, which is still valuable. Don't hesitate to sign up and
help out just because there are too many sites and categories in the LDS
heirarchy. Every bit of assistance helps.

As a last bit of motivation, note that the ODP is very widely
replicated. For example, the Google Directory [1] was created with ODP
data, ordered by PageRank. It is also repliated on literaly hundreds of
sites accross the Internet (which I suspect is one of the reasons that
getting a good site listed can make such a difference to its PageRank
and thus Google search placement.
