Like Martin I'm also a bit puzzled here. Are you saying that it should be
possible to remove the modules needed for mounting the boot device from
the initramfs and put them elsewhere?

Me too in that case, because the extra space this costs can be gained back
by removing the tools needed to backup such an initramfs.
