Telling Tales 4
This week we continue with our oral history series on the Stick Together
Show with Part I of the story of Vic Williams. Vic worked at the Union
Carbide petrochemical plant in Altona in Melbourne's western suburbs during
the late 1970s & 1980s. During that time, workers at the plant engaged in an
historic sit-in over the issue of a 35-hour working week. In today's show,
Vic talks of the workers involved in that struggle & some of the day-to-day
issues they faced in the quest for a shorter working week. Vic was speaking
to 3CR's Jay Estorhnino in an interview recorded for the Telling Tales Oral
History series.
Vic's story is particularly relevant this week with the launch of the
national "Work Overload" campaign on Monday. An initiative of the ACTU, TLCs
& affiliated unions, the campaign seeks to look at issues of unpaid overtime
& increasing workloads in Australian workplaces. A hotline will run from
